Birr is approximately 20 minutes by car from Kinnitty and Ardmore Country House on the R421. The two towns are connected by a pleasant country road through the Offaly countryside.
What are the best things to do in Birr Ireland?

What is the Great Telescope at Birr Castle?
The Great Telescope was built in the 1840s by the third Earl of Rosse and remained the largest telescope in the world from 1845 to 1917, a period of 72 years. It is on display in the grounds of Birr Castle Demesne and is included in the general admission ticket.

Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival takes place every year in early August and runs for nine days. It is one of the longest running festivals of its kind in Ireland, featuring over 90 events including theatre, music, visual arts, street performance, the annual Vintage Sunday Parade and fireworks. Where do the Slieve Bloom Mountain Bike Trails start?
The main trailhead is in Kinnitty village, just a short distance from Ardmore Country House. To access the trails from Kinnitty follow the signed route from the village through the GAA pitch until you reach the single track trails which start in the woods beyond Kinnitty Castle .The trails climb through the forests surrounding Kinnitty Castle before reaching the open mountain slopes of the Slieve Blooms.
Can I hire a bike in Kinnitty?
Yes. Bike hire is available through Slieve Bloom Mountain Bike Centre, which operates from the courtyard at Ardmore Country House. Mountain bikes can be hired in advance, and e-bikes are also available nearby.
Is Ardmore Country House cyclist-friendly?
Absolutely. Ardmore Country House welcomes cyclists and provides free off-road parking, secure bike storage, bike wash facilities and comfortable accommodation close to the Slieve Bloom Mountain Bike Trails.
Is there secure storage for bikes?

Yes. The Blue Trail is ideal for beginners and families, while more experienced riders can choose from the Red and Black trails for a greater challenge.

What is the Slieve Bloom Way?
The Slieve Bloom Way is a 70km circular long-distance walking trail through the Slieve Bloom Mountains with a total climb of 1,275 metres.
How long does it take to walk the Slieve Bloom Way?
Most walkers complete the trail over three days, although it can also be enjoyed in shorter sections from the various trailheads.
Which direction should I walk the Slieve Bloom Way?
Clockwise is recommended as it makes for a more natural and enjoyable journey through the landscape.
Do you provide facilities for walkers?
Yes. Guests can enjoy free parking, a drying room for your gear, walking maps, local route advice, packed lunches and assistance with arranging local taxis to and from trailheads.
Can I leave my car while walking the Slieve Bloom Way?

Can I get to the Slieve Bloom Way without a car?

Is the Slieve Bloom Way suitable for beginners?
The route is rated moderate to hard and is best suited to walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. If you are new to long distance walking, trying one of the shorter looped walks in the Slieve Blooms first is a good way to get a feel for the terrain.
Where can I eat along the way?
Kinnitty is the only trailhead village with a café, restaurant and pub. For all other sections bring your own food and water as there are no facilities along the route.
Is there parking at the trailheads?
Yes, all six trailheads have car parking. Glenbarrow gets very busy at weekends so arriving early is advisable. Guests staying two nights or more at Ardmore Country House can leave their car at the house free of charge for the duration of their walk.
What is the best time of year to walk the Slieve Bloom Way?
The route is walkable year round. Spring is beautiful for the bluebells and autumn is spectacular for the colours on the bog and heather. May is also when the Slieve Bloom Walking Festival takes place.
