Tullamore Dew  Whiskey Visitor Experience

The first production of the whiskey now known as “Tullamore Dew” was in 1829. The man who gave his name to the distillery was Daniel Edmond Williams {DEW} from Mountmellick who  started working there when he was just 14 years old. The name came from the initials of Daniel Edmond Williams.

Inside the walls of this 19th century bonded warehouse, visit the Tullamore Dew Visitor Centre, take a guided tour which blends audiovisual and your senses of sight, smell, and taste to understand the passion behind making a glass of Tullamore D.E.W. Irish whiskey.

It’s no coincidence that the old distillery was located on the banks of the majestic Grand Canal that stretched through the heart of Ireland, from Dublin to the Shannon basin. This played a significant role in the distribution of the whiskey. The distillery had its own canal boat – 55B. Drawn by horses, it would take seven days to complete a round trip journey to and from Dublin. From Dublin Port the whiskey was shipped around the world.

During the great freeze of 1942, the canal froze over, which delighted the population of Tullamore. One intrepid local by the name of “Egan” was wagered to skate the length of the canal to Dublin, a challenge he duly accepted and returned to collect his prize.
